Coihaique is a city located in the Aysén Region in Chile.
It was founded in 1929 as an agricultural colony and in the 1950s its development began as a service center for the exploitation of natural resources, such as livestock and mining.
In 1974 it became the capital of the recently created Aysén Region.
In 2007, the city suffered a strong earthquake that severely affected its infrastructure.
However, since then it has experienced significant economic and tourist growth, thanks to its privileged location in a valley surrounded by mountains and rivers, as well as its proximity to the Queulat and Cerro Castillo National Parks.
