Porvenir is a city located on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, in the extreme south of Chile.
It was founded in 1894 by European settlers who came to the area attracted by gold mining in the nearby Bahía Inútil.
In its early years, the city was an important trading port, and also played a prominent role in the exploitation of wool and sheep farming.
In the 1940s, the city suffered an economic decline due to the decline in mining and livestock activity, but in recent decades it has experienced a tourist boom thanks to its privileged location on the Strait of Magellan and its natural attractions such as the Reserve Alacalufes National and nearby Dawson Island.
Currently, Porvenir is a quiet and picturesque city, with an interesting mix of European and Chilota architecture.
