Castro is the capital of the island of Chiloé, in the Los Lagos region of Chile.
It was founded in 1567 by the Spanish conquistador Martín Ruiz de Gamboa and has played an important role in the history and culture of the region.
The city has been affected by several earthquakes, including one in 1960 that caused extensive damage.
Castro is known for its wooden houses built on stilts, called stilt houses, which stretch out over the water on the edge of the Castro estuary.
The city also boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed wooden cathedral, dating from the 19th century and a leading example of the area's religious architecture.
